“Necessity is the mother of invention” is a well-known proverb. But what happens if we set out to explore creative invention without waiting for a specific need to arise? In this fun and fast-paced workshop we use collage to discover what can be invented through creative play…through the assembling, disassembling and reassembling of object and form. We will investigate the potential for improvement which a fractured, changeable situation offers us, and along the way, explore the creative opportunities which instability and flux hold.
The workshop will be led by PORTABLE members Miranda Miller and Jeremy Morgan. Miranda’s practice uses objects including ephemera from her childhood to engage with the repair process and to open conversations about our shared human fragility. Speaking of her work, Miranda says, “The work is an exploration of the fractured self which is sometimes painful and difficult to look at, but, I believe necessary to be able to repair and heal.”
Jeremy is an abstract painter seeking to marry dynamism and friction with the beauty and imperfection of the contemporary world. “Being open to change during the making process is an important strategy”, he says, “it’s quite common for me to invert or re-order elements many times, so that the final painting ends up radically changed from my original sketches!”
No previous experience is necessary – just bring yourself and prepare to have fun!!
