COVID-19: Oxford hospital temporarily halts pancreas transplants

The situation is under constant review.

The Churchill Hospital in Headington is currently closed to pancreas transplants due to 'high cases of coronavirus in the community.'

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust - which runs The Churchill - has described the decision to halt these operations as a 'difficult' one to make.

A spokesperson from The Trust said: "We made the decision to remove the risk of transmission for our more vulnerable patients.

We appreciate that this is a very worrying time for people, however we will be doing all that we can to reinstate these operations as soon as it is safe to do so and all patients are being kept under close review by their consultants."

The West London Renal and Transplant Centre, Guy’s Hospital, London, is also temporarily closed to pancreas transplants.

Meanwhile, kidney transplants are now paused at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, while The Royal Free Hospital, London, is closed to liver transplants, and Cambridge’s Addenbrooke’s Hospital is only open to “super urgent” cases, because of coronavirus.
