AN ENCHANTING EXHIBITION OF FAIRY PHOTOGRAPHS IN THE LONG ROOM AT THE GALLERY STEVENTON BY WIRRAL PHOTOGRAPHER CHARLOTTE BIRD
Charlotte Bird will be exhibiting her fairy photographs in The Long Room at The Gallery, Steventon, from Wednesday 26th November to Tuesday 23rd December 2008.
Fairy photographer, Charlotte Bird, revisited the Beck at Cottingley in West Yorkshire nearly a century after cousins Elsie Wright and Francis Griffiths found and photographed (allegedly) fairies at the bottom of their garden.
Charlotte's stunning fairy photographs evoke imagery of the Edwardian and Victorian era, touching the heart with their playfulness and innocence. Set against a backdrop of enchanting woodlands and streams, Cottingley Beck has one again been brought to life by the spirit of the Fairies.
Charlotte undertakes commissions, placing children in any setting.
The Gallery, Steventon, sells British Designed and British Produced Interiors and is set out like a home. In addition to The Long Room there is a kitchen, sitting room, dining room, study and bedrooms, all in a beautifully converted barn on a farm. The Gallery is adjacent to The Old Farmhouse Bakery. Both are open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 9am – 5pm and Saturday 8.30am – 1pm. Appointments for The Gallery can be made outside of these hours.

REFLECTIONS OF ABINGDON
An exhibition of oil paintings
by Bill Pike
Abingdon County Hall Museum
12 November 2008 – 1 March 2009
With Abingdon at a crossroads in its long life, this new exhibition at Abingdon County Hall Museum could not be better placed, or timed. Featuring views of Abingdon, seen through reflections in water, this unusual collection, painted by the contemporary artist Bill Pike, has been assembled over more than 30 years. It includes a number of new pieces, painted specifically for this occasion. Colourful, bright and appealing, these works reflect many of the best aspects of Abingdon, and demonstrate why this town is one of the jewels in the Crown of Oxfordshire.
Originally trained as a meteorologist, Bill Pike used to be based at the meteorological station at the former RAF Abingdon, now Dalton Barracks. This training in, and love of, weather and climate has heavily influenced his painting. Every photograph he takes, to use as the basis for a painting, is matched with a detailed drawing of the location, the weather conditions and the subject matter. These maps will be displayed alongside the oil paintings to show visitors the exact situations that the image was originally seen.
In the Footsteps of
Henry Taunt
A journey recorded by
Graham Diprose & Jeff Robins
Abingdon County Hall Museum
12 November 2008 – 1 March 2009
Henry W. Taunt was one of the foremost Victorian photographers. Based in Oxford, his work captures, on film, the members of the British population in topographical views of a bygone era. Through his first small shop, at 33 Cornmarket Street, and latterly at 9 & 10 Broad Street, Taunt brought to the attention of the public the most modern photographic techniques for producing quick and effective images out in the countryside. These skills gave Taunt the opportunity to work with his favourite subject matter, something that dominated his work and his life...the River Thames.
Professional photographers, and lecturers, Graham Diprose and Jeff Robins were inspired to follow "In the Footsteps of Henry Taunt" by Taunt's own publication "A New Map of the River Thames", which he first produced in the 1870s. They have visited more than seventy of the locations featured in Henry Taunt's work, and recaptured contemporary versions of his views, using the most ground breaking technology available.
Abingdon County Hall Museum are proud to be able to display a selection of these modern photographs of the River Thames, alongside high quality reproductions of the matching Henry Taunt pieces. Towards the beginning of 2009 the majority of the photographs will be replaced by a second selection providing a fresh viewpoint of other parts of the river between its source, at Thames Head, and the Houses of Parliament in London, where this collection finishes.

Step up to beat breast cancer this December
'Tis the season to be jolly – and lace up your walking boots for Breast Cancer Campaign's annual Winter Wonderland Friendship Walk.
With the Christmas period just weeks away, now is the perfect time to wrap up warm and walk for breast cancer research on Sunday 7 December in Henley-on-Thames.
Olympic rower, Louisa Reeve, has already signed up for the six-mile festive stroll and wants other walkers to join her on the day and enjoy mince pies and mulled wine afterwards.
Breast Cancer Campaign currently funds three projects in Oxford worth more than £295,000 and the money raised from this walk will help fund Professor Leonard Seymour's research project at the University of Oxford. Professor Seymour is looking to develop an entirely new way of treating breast cancer that has spread to other parts of the body using a virus that is able to target breast cancer cells but leave healthy cells intact. If this technique is successful it could lead to new breast cancer treatments with fewer side effects, which would help to improve survival rates.
Participation is £10 per adult, free for under 16s and everyone is encouraged to raise money for the sponsored walk, which starts at Henley-on-Thames Youth Centre. Each walker will receive some snowflake head boppers, goody bag, medal and post walk festive refreshments. If you would like to join Louisa on the daytime walk, or if you would like information on becoming a Walk Champ and arranging your own walk, please call 020 7749 4126 or visit www.breastcancercampaign.org

Beyond Vision, which will run from the 3rd to 17th December, is a retrospective of work by Sharon Wyper, an Oxford based artist specialising in painting and 2D media. The public can visit the exhibition Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 4.00 pm, during term time.
Sharon has taken different routes in the pursuit of 'seeing' that which is beyond the visually obvious. As part of her exhibition, Sharon will be displaying the piece she created as a result of her residency at local science facility, Diamond Light Source, which is near Didcot in Oxfordshire. As the UK's national synchrotron facility, Diamond enables scientists to delve deep into matter and materials to reveal the atomic and molecular structure of the world around us. Through the work created during the residency, which is entitled 'The whole is made from the sum of its parts', Sharon explores the stages of the process of "seeing the invisible". The piece itself becomes a link between the building, the construction process and the scientific research which is its end result.
